Tradition in a new light

As one of the oldest hotels in the heart of Kaltern, the Goldener Stern has a long history to look back on. We can only take a rough guess as to exactly when the hotel was built, but we do know that it was referred to in the 1742 registry of the community of Kaltern as the “Wirtsbehausung am Stern”. This name, along with “Wirtstafern am Stern” and “Sternwirt” were used until around 1840, when the appellation “Goldener” was first added.

The Sternwirt was originally only the corner building of Marktgasse/ Bädergässl (known today as Andreas- Hofer-Straße/Sterngasse). This changed in 1760 when the titled von Leiz family acquired the house at the rear of the hotel, so that by the end of the 18th century the “Wirtshaus am Stern” had become an imposing guesthouse indeed, where locals would come to enjoy a drop of fine wine from the surrounding wine trail.

From one distinguished family to another, the hotel changed hands often until the von Stefanelli family took it over at the beginning of the 20th century. Our aim in the present is to maintain the traditions of bygone days and to have the Goldener Stern shine in a new light.
